for those purple lovers out there – create a bombshell lady shredder costume from tmnt this halloween!

This Halloween my softball teammate Kayla requested a female Shredder costume from TMNT.   We live in a small college town in Central Wisconsin where bars outnumber grocery stores 3 to 1.   Our small downtown square has at least 30 bars so Halloween floods the street.  This costume has the right mix of glam for the crazy weekend and comfort for the bitter cold fall season.

Some Halloween costumes can be so hard to find so making your own can be the perfect solution!  Follow along with my easy steps to make your own TMNT Lady Shredder costume for this Halloween!

1. Pick Out a Pattern and Sew a Cape

Shredder wears a vibrant purple cape.  And really no superhero or villain is complete without a cape.  I have a couple adult and kid superhero patterns on hand ready to trace any fabric of choice.  To make a cape you simply cut out a half circle.  The flat section drapes your shoulders and the curve becomes the bottom.  I like to use stretchy fabric for the flow effect but unfortunately it happens to be hard to sew.  To avoid this problem sew on non-stretchy seams, which can be bought from the store to save time.  I added both draw string ties and velcro.

 2. Create Armor

     A. Arm & Leg Bands

To avoid injury from the TMNT turtles armor is necessary.  For this soccer shin guards can be found at your local Walmart.  Use large guards for your legs and small ones for your forearms.  I use Rustoleum primer spray paint before any glue or color is applied.  Protruding from the front are sword-like blades.  I created a small plastic template for the small and large spike.  Using a glue gun is the most efficient route.  After glueing down the spikes I finish with metallic spray paint.

    B. Glove Claws

To match the color scheme, buy cheap gray gloves. Put the gloves on and trace the top of your hand onto craft foam.  Glue two spikes to the top of the rectangle.  Spray the metallic paint and glue to the top of the glove while still on your hand.  Be careful the glue is hot. Repeat with the other hand.

     C. Shoulder Pads

Because the cape I created drapes over each shoulder it would be hard to put shoulder armor underneath this.   Instead I created pads to velcro to the top of the cape.  Cut out two circles out of craft foam.  Cut two lines on each side. Overlap and glue.  Attach four large blades each. Spray paint and attach Velcro to the underside.  Add Velcro to your cape.

3. Create a Helmet

There are many interpretations of the helmet of shredder.  I chose to add blades.  Order a hard hat online.   Cut long stripes with curved edges. Prime and paint.  Cut out rectangles for sidebar shields.  Prime, paint and add velcro.

4. Sew a Face Guard

Shredder has a face guard with a mesh screen.  Personally I don’t like wearing masks because they get steamy and gross so I opted to do a fabric mask.  Cut metallic fabric into a triangle. Sew on some fabric Trim.  Apply fabric glue to the sides so it doesn’t fray.   Add stretchy string ties.

5. Pick Out a Dress and Accessories

Lastly, I found a cheap dress at a local store, I added two ninja swords, a black belt, leggings and boots.
