Refurbish Your Old Metal Chairs In 5 Easy Steps!

Refurbish Metal Chairs

1. Sand Off Old Chipped Paint

The first step to refurbishing your outdoor metal chairs is to remove all of the old paint.  Move your item to a well ventilated area.  Make sure to test for lead paint and use a mask before you start sanding.  I use 40 grit paper and sand down to the bare metal but if you only want to remove the loose paint that is fine as well.

2. Prime With White Spray Paint

Because I sanded the chair down to the bare metal it is important to apply a primer so that the paint has something to hold on to.  I used spray paint from the hardware store.  If you can still see the metal apply a second coat.

3. Paint With Your Favorite Color

When picking the color scheme for your metal chairs it is important to reference where it will be used.  Will you enjoy your chair out in the garden or inside in the sun room?  I chose a mint color because it will be outside among the plants.  Do not under estimate how much paint you will need, especially if you have more than one chair.  Continue to apply paint until you no longer see white streaks underneath.

4. Paint Your Family Name

Don’t leave your metal chairs a single color.  Snaz it up with some wording.  Print out any wording you choose from your computer and cut out the wording with a simple utility knife.  If you want to save time you can pick up templates at the local craft store.  Spray paint on the wording with a complementing color.

5. Seal With a Matte Clear Coat

Seal your metal chairs with a cheap clear matte spray paint.  It will make sure that your project stays it’s brilliant color a lot longer then the last paint job. Make sure your project does not fade in the sun or chip and flake with the changing weather.
